Foam in Van Loon –
Bart Julius Peters

16 January-15 March 2009

In 2005 Museum Van Loon opened its doors for Foam_ Fotografiemuseum, Amsterdam, located directly opposite the museum. At the beginning of 2009 Foam will temporarily close its doors again in order to set up a large exhibition, this time the retrospective of Richard Avedon, and so invited Dutch photographer Bart Julius Peters to be inspired by the house of the family Van Loon. The result is the remarkable exhibition Foam in Van Loon – Bart Julius Peters. Peters makes use of Museum Van Loon’s collection, resulting in an interesting fusion between his work and the museum. In this cooperation, each party preserves its own identity, while at the same time an interesting tension is formed through the integration of modern visual culture in the old period rooms of Museum Van Loon.

In addition to an overview of his work, Peters made new works for this exhibition for which he was, as always, inspired by his theme "longing."

Peters’ oeuvre is characterised by a feeling of nostalgia, romance and the timelessness that that evokes. The grainy black-and-white photos look much older than they actually are. This is strengthened by his choice of subject matter: like a cosmopolitan vagabond, Peters wanders the world in search of the "old world," apparently old-fashioned places and people. Time and place seem to be irrelevant, but a certain feeling of decadence keeps coming back.

Bart Julius Peters (Kuwait, 1971) studied at the Rietveld Academy and has published in different newspapers including RE_magazine, Fantastic Man and Foam Magazine. In 2002 he was selected for the Hyères photography prize and last year his work was part of the exhibition in department store Colette, Paris. Peters is currently putting the finishing touches to a book that will be published in 2009.
