China in Transition

August 9-
October 26, 2008

In Yang Fudong's spectacular video and photo works we learn about China in transition — seen from the inside. His works reveal breathtaking stories about the younger Chinese generation’s experience of history, extreme urbanization and new market economy.

The exhibition opens the same day as the opening of The Olympic Games in Beijing. Filmmaker Yang Fudong (b. 1971) has created some of the most staggeringly beautiful works of independent cinema to come out of China. Yang's work has an anachronistic feel, combining the lyricism of Chinese scroll painting, with the loose expressiveness of nouvelle vague, all mixed with the stark tableau of Jim Jarmusch whom Yang cites as something of an inspiration. His critically acclaimed films reflect on the conundrums of idealism and ideology.

Yang Fudong (b. 1971) is among the most significant names on the contemporary international art scene. He lives and works in Shanghai and has over the past ten years received great international recognition throughout the world. His best-known work Seven Intellectuals in Bamboo Forest was one of the most mentioned and praised contributions from last year’s Venice Biennale. Originally trained as a painter from the Chinese Art Academy in Hangzhou in 1995 he had already begun working with video and photography in 1993 which has since been his preferred medium of expression. Characteristic for his works is their atmospheric, seductive and mystifying aesthetics.
